Abstract
Expressionism, an exhibition that showcases 10 works on paper and canvas dating from 1952
to 1994
by
Norman Bluhm, Willem de Kooning, Sam Francis, and
Kazuo Shiraga.
Inspired by their surrealist
predecessors, who favoured techniques that led them to automatic, spontaneous, and subconscious
creations, the abstract expressionists typically painted in a non-objective style that captured the
essence
of the depicted.
Emerging in the aftermath of World War II in a time of
artistic censorship,
abstraction contrary to
figurative creation was seen as unpolitical and therefore did not rouse any suspicion. New York
flourished as it offered a haven for artists, collectors who fled Europe creating a symbiosis in
which
talent, hard work, experimentation, and audacity catapulted the City of Dreams to its new role
of
global
cultural capital. Embarking on a collective journey in which
the way or the process
equalled the
work or outcome
itself the abstract expressionist’s
redefined what it meant to create art in
the
broadest sense of meaning.

Abstract Expressionism
zu präsentieren. Die Ausstellung zeigt 10 Werke auf Papier und Leinwand
aus den Jahren 1952 bis 1994 von
Norman Bluhm, Willem de Kooning, Sam Francis
und
Kazuo
Shiraga. Inspiriert von ihren surrealistischen Vorgängern, die Techniken bevorzugten, die
sie zu
automatischen, spontanen und unbewussten Kreationen führten, malten die abstrakten Expressionisten
typischerweise in einem ungegenständlichen Stil, der das Wesen des Dargestellten einfing.
Sie entstanden nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in einer Zeit der Kunstzensur, in der die Abstraktion im
Gegensatz zum figurativen Schaffen als unpolitisch angesehen wurde und daher keinen Verdacht
erregte. New York blühte auf, da es einen Zufluchtsort für Künstler und Sammler bot, die aus Europa
flohen und eine Symbiose schufen, in der Talent, harte Arbeit, Experimentierfreude und Kühnheit die
Stadt der Träume zu ihrer neuen Rolle als
globale Kulturhauptstadt katapultierten.
Die abstrakten
Expressionisten begaben sich auf eine kollektive Reise, bei der die
Art und Weise oder der
Prozess
dem Werk oder dem Ergebnis selbst gleichkam, und
definierten neu, was es bedeutet,
