Galerie von Vertes is proud to present FEMALE RADIANCE
that centres around the perception and depiction of women in the 20th
century. Dating from 1927 to 2001, FEMALE RADIANCE
offers a selection of abstract and figurative sculptures, works on paper, and canvas. Created by women and men, FEMALE RADIANCE
aims to provide food for thought as to how women saw themselves and how they were seen and perceived through the eyes of society.
From the earliest fertility statues to contemporary art, the depiction of women in the visual arts has evolved from religious, mythological, and erotic scenes to independent portrayals of and by women. Their contribution and roles as muses, collectors, artists, patrons, critics, and historians are still being re-established, inspiring change, and reshaping our cultural attitudes. Female artists like Gabriele Münter
and Yayoi Kusama
, but also men like Willem de Kooning
, Tom Wesselmann
, and Andy Warhol
, shook up the visual arts with their visionary, bold, and confronting creations of women transforming gender stereotypes in the arts.
